Okay, you all knew this day was coming, so let's get right to it. Now, now, don't fret, the process is quite simple: We take all of your bad cards... and put them in the "Never again" box.
But, before we do that, we need to sort through your collection, so today, I'm going to teach you how to tell a bad card from a good card, a better card from a sub par card and what you can do with it all. For the sake of time and simplicity we shall be covering a personal favorite of mine: Removal.
Removal, for those new to the game, is any card (usually a one shot effect) that, we, removes a card from the field. More times than not it is used to describe a creature removal spell. Some of the best removal can be found in Black, black being the color of death, ambition and the like. The upside is that most are pretty strong. The down side is, there is a LOT of removal in Magic, we are talking loads. So, I have prepared a sort of mash up for you. Enjoy.
Worse
Agonizing Demise (Six total mana in two colors just for some damage? The anti-regeneration is rarely relevant so you may as well just run a kill spell and a small burn spell.)
Annihilate (Anti-Regen, plus a draw does NOT justify this obscene mana cost.)
Assassin's Blade (I don't even really need to say anything, just READ this nonsense: "
Cast Assassin's Blade only during the declare attackers step and only if you've been attacked this step.
Destroy target nonblack attacking creature." Just, no. If this is your only kill spell, just do without, or run another creature.)
CRADLE TO GRAVE (Instant speed is the only good part. It kills a newcomer to the board. Top decking this is always a dead draw, and you can do better.)
Cruel Revival (Slightly narrow effect, and you can just run Terror and a small recursion spell for a fraction of the cost.)
Hero's Demise (Say it with me: NARROW. EFFECT.)
Violet Pall (Five mana to make an easily removed token... Seeing a pattern here?)
Assassin's Strike (Too slow, too expensive, and the discard is completely useless.)
Certain Death (Okay, seriously, if your kill spell is at Sorcery speed and cost more than three mana it better do some amazing things. This does not do amazing things.)
Dark Offering (Okay, this is becoming redundant)
Dead Ringers (Narrow, slow AND expensive...)
Death's Caress (See above examples
PREMATURE BURIAL (Worse Cradle to Grave. If you own a copy, hide it.)
Sip of Hemlock (Expensive and weak)
Now that you have a list of cards NOT to use, here is a line up of solid options or, at worse, a list of effects and mana costs to strive for
Better
Doom Blade (One of the best removals in Magic, only misses black, and it's instant speed)
Terror (Doom Blade before it was cool)
Go for the Throat (The other half of Terror and brother to Doom Blade, if you can get it, run it)
Grasp of Darkness (-x/-x effects are extremely handy for dealing with buffed up creatures as well as those pesky indestructible foes and two mana for a -4/-4 at instant speed is as good as you get without having a dismember handy.)
Last Gasp (Splash-able and a great stand in for Grasp since the difference is a mere -1/-1)
Victim of Night (Hits nearly EVERY CREATURE. What it can't hit, is easily dealt with by using another of the listed removal spells. If you come across one, or even a payset, don't hesitate to run it.)
Geth's Verdict (Instant speed sacrifice effect for when your opponent has a solo threat or to two-for-one them when they try to improve their board. Just cast in response.
Dismember (Paying anywhere from one to three mana to essentially kill whatever you want? Yes please.)
Hero's Downfall (Hits Planeswalkers, nuff said)
Ruinous Path (Slow version of Downfall, but can potentially get you a creature if need be)
Hex (Essentially killing six creatures for one mana each, only downside being you HAVE to hit six, even if some are yours.)
Disfigure (Baby Grasp. Cast two for the same effect.)
Now, look through your collection and see which group your removal falls into; expensive, situational and/ or slow? BAD, don't run it. Now, I know I have said, use what you have, so for the sake of being fair, I suggest using the best of the INSTANT removals within the Worse category (try to make each choice count). Avoid the high-cost ones with deceptive effects like minor life loss and discard and you should be fine.
In the meantime, keep building and remember to have fun.
